In a country with a history of high demand for antiviral medications, Australians are taking a crucial step towards the “next generation of cold and flu,” which will soon be able to tackle the virus even without a vaccine.
A new research study published in the International Journal of Clinical Infection Research (IJCR) and published in the journal,Antiviral Research, has shown that the use of antiviral drugs such as aciclovir and valacyclovir is associated with a significantly higher rate of genital herpes and herpes zoster (shingles).
According to the study, aciclovir is a “more potent” and “stronger” antibiotic than valacyclovir, and the study found that it had a “greater” risk of developing genital herpes compared with valacyclovir. It also found that those who used aciclovir had a lower frequency of genital herpes and compared to those who used valacyclovir.
“The findings from this study demonstrate that aciclovir and valacyclovir use in Australian patients with genital herpes is associated with a significantly higher rate of genital herpes compared with valacyclovir,” Dr Catherine Jones, the lead author of the study, explained.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is the leading cause of genital herpes worldwide, and it affects millions of people in the world, with some 5 million of these people having it. In the last decade, the incidence of HSV-1 has doubled, from 8.7 cases per 1,000 person-years to 12.3 per 1,000 person-years.
There have been numerous studies on the use of antiviral drugs such as aciclovir in treating the disease, but this study is the first to evaluate this potential risk of genital herpes and herpes zoster in Australian women.
“This study shows that using aciclovir in women with genital herpes is associated with a significantly higher rate of genital herpes compared to aciclovir. This may be a result of the fact that women with genital herpes are more likely to have HSV-1 infection,” Dr Jones explained.
However, the study also found that the risk of herpes zoster was not statistically significant.
“The risk of herpes zoster is lower in women who are exposed to a high dose of aciclovir compared to those who are exposed to low doses,” Dr Jones said.
In Australia, the current study has limitations and is therefore not conclusive, she added. “This study confirms that the use of aciclovir in women with genital herpes is associated with a significantly higher risk of genital herpes than that seen with valacyclovir.”
Viruses are the most common cause of genital herpes in Australia (1).In the U. S., around 40% of sexually active Australian women have HSV-1, which is transmitted by an infected infected person. HSV-1 is the most prevalent form of sexually transmitted infection, with around 1,300,000 infections per year in Australian women.
Other causes of genital herpes in Australia include:
If you have a genital herpes infection, it is important to get tested for the virus to be diagnosed.
If you have one of the herpes simplex virus types 1 (HSV-1) strains, you are advised to get tested for the virus, and if you have a genital herpes infection, then be tested for the virus and the symptoms you have. Viremia is the best way to get tested and to get a virus infection.
There are some risks associated with getting tested for HSV-1, including:
It is important to note that if you have an infection and have HSV-1, you should seek medical attention immediately for the virus.
If you have genital herpes and you are not sure if you have HSV-1, then the first step to getting tested for the virus is to get tested for the virus.
